The History of Gude Brothers

Adolph Gude

Gude Brothers Company began in 1889, when Adolph and William F. Gude first sold flowers out of a horse-drawn cart in Washington, D.C. They eventually opened flower shops throughout the D.C. metropolitan area and were founding members of FTD. When it became increasingly difficult to get high-quality flowers for their customers, they developed a greenhouse operation, specializing in cut flowers.

In 1922, Adolph and William went their separate ways – Adolph to Rockville to specialize in landscape and hardier nursery stock, whereas William stayed in D.C. to continue the family greenhouse and retail flower operations. During the Great Depression, William’s son, Granville Gude, took over the business. He handed it down to his son, William F. Gude II, in 1977. Today his son, William Lawrence Granville Gude, operates Gude Brothers® in Middletown, Maryland.
